Each time a major awards ceremony nears, one notices an outcry for introducing additional classifications to honor unsung work and delight the hearts of followers who have specialized interests.
Another commentator previously argued supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. The same goes for strategy board titles, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward because like all single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand stands as crucial above others. Here's the proposal: We need a category for puzzle games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and inevitably start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason cinema institutions avoid this approach. Yet it remains a necessary evil for the industry of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they hardly constitute as a single art form.
To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Leading game ceremonies presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications actually cover many game types, and you can find room for numerous titles.
Not so for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Think about these recent excellent titles, all very different: structural challenges from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. What category would fit them within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Acknowledgment Issues
Many instances occur outstanding logic titles released every year without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.
- An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked in any category during that awards season
- Another creative title missed out in 2019
- A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment recently
- Limited numbers of puzzle games managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories
Value of Brain-Teasers
Frequently they represent compact experiences, yet the craft in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Well-known matching games stand as most engaged experiences in the world maintaining this status for many years.
The famous puzzle experience challenges popular creative games competing to become highest-selling title ever; it also contends as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, while interacting with diverse game types.
Proposal and Rationale
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. You could fill a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent so many good games out.
Restating the point, these represent titles that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators are working at the hard edge of video game design, producing among most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Similar to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
