The pace bowler has secured 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming Ashes series.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches kicking off on November 21 in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of taking part.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and there are permutations at play, not just the back issue, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he will feature a key capacity. Hopefully starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with recurrences in multiple past seasons causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the contest.

The selector indicated that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from the national team for their one-day international series against India as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the initial game as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs regardless. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
